Algebra 1: Graphing Functions using Calculator Based Rangers
In this lesson, students will be using Calculator Based Rangers (CBR)'s to recreate distance-time graphs in a collaborative group setting. During this lesson, students are asked to be in groups of four, with each having specific roles. The four students have a handout and are asked to recreate the four linear functions using CBR's. A student is supposed to walk in front of the CBR and move at a rate that replicates the rate of change of the functions on the handout. After the students have recreated the four functions, the class will come together to discuss their observations using the CBR and how they were able to recreate the linear functions.
The lesson design is structured to be technology-based and allowing the students to have a sense of ownership and agency. This is displayed by the students having freedom in how they recreate their linear functions. In addition, the students are in collaborative groups in order to share ideas and receive feedback from one another. Additionally, the technology used in this lesson allows the students to continue going through trial and error. It's important to build a classroom environment where the students feel comfortable trying something, failing, realizing their mistakes, and trying again to gain different results. Overall, this lesson is important in building critical thinking and problem-solving skills in the students.
